Each move requires lots of effort, good planning and timing to make a relocation possible and successful. If this is your first move, or you don’t have much experience in relocation, or you are about to organize the move of a large house or apartment, then you will surely need some guidance to assist you on this. But either way, even professionals from the moving industry are learning and growing in what they do, so what’s left to say about people without that much knowledge in moves. The point is that it is essential to be ready to learn when you have to make a relocation happen because it will allow you to simplify your move, remove or limit the stress that comes out of it and get better results. That is why we’ve decided that it is vital to create an article with a moving timeline checklist to guide you through your move week by week.

8 Weeks Before Moving

This is the time to research – a moving company, a new home, new school, etc.

Make a plan of what home you will need depending on your needs, how much you can spare from your budget, and start searching for a house or apartment according to your needs and requirements.
When you’ve chosen the city or village you will be moving to, explore not just properties, but also neighborhoods, crime rate, salary levels, costs of living, etc.
Once you’ve chosen a neighborhood inform yourself of the schools and job offers so you don’t get unpleasant surprises in the last minute.
Get quotes from moving companies in order to get an idea of how much your move will cost you approximately. They should be free of charge, as they are in TheMovingBlog.com. Estimates will help you determine what sort of move you can afford, what services you can hire and how much the different movers charge. 3 or 4 quotes are the minimum that you need.

6 Weeks Before a Move

6 weeks before a move is the time to begin cleaning up your home. Don’t waste time. Items that won’t be moved should be removed from your home – given away to charity, sold, thrown away, etc. Don’t bring clutter at your move because it will only boost up the price of it.
Inform yourself of state requirements if you will be moving your car as well.
Look for information on what is necessary to switch or change your address with utility companies. Some of them operate in particular states only and you may not be able to use the same providers after the move. There could be online forms you could fill in so check that out in time. It may seem like a minor detail but once you sum up all the minor tasks you will get a long list that will need sufficient time to realize.
Begin looking for a job and arranging job interviews. If you’re not able to travel, ask to have them over the phone. Getting personally your CV to a company you apply for is a great idea, but if you cannot do it, don’t wait until you move. The earlier, the better.

After you’ve contacted movers and you’ve made your choice, it is time to arrange more precisely the details of the move – ask them to come over to your home and show them around the items which they will have to relocate. Make sure you point out items which won’t be moved and things that need a special care like valuable itemsand/ or sensitive equipment, piano, china, etc.

4 Weeks Before You Move

Once there are only 4 weeks before you move, it is time to make a plan about consuming the food that you have left. If you don’t want to throw away or give away frozen food, consider what you will do with it.
Throw away garbage, give away things, make a garage sale, etc. You don’t need piles of stuff unnecessary any longer lying around in your feet and making you trip over them.
Begin packing. Start with items you won’t need until the move like clothes from another season (swimming suites, ski equipment, etc. – you get the idea). Make sure you pack and label everything well. Do a little bit of work every day, especially if you have a large move.
Set an area in your room for packing and an area where you can keep packed boxes and bags out of your way until moving day comes.
Make a list with the boxes that you pack and their content. In this way you will know which item is in which box and exactly how many boxes you have. You don’t want to find your DVD is missing 3 weeks after the move because you didn’t need it before then.
Visit the city you will be moving to, if you can, in order to get a feel for the place and begin making yourself comfortable with the area and neighborhood. You can go to the school which your kids will visit, check out some fun opportunities near your new home like shopping centres and malls.
3 Weeks Before Moving

Make a floor plan for your new home. You don’t want to pack your desk or couch just to find out you won’t be able to get it through the door or it won’t fit where you have initially planned it to be.
If you want to change furniture, equipment that you have, buy new kitchen appliance, etc. this is the time to do it. Use the opportunity to purchase things after the move. You can have them delivered from the store the day after moving day.

Organize a moving party. 3 weeks before you move is a good time because people will need to know in advance in order to make the arrangements that they need so that they can attend your event.
If you have kids, you can also make the same party for them. In case your children are small, collect contacts of your kids’ friends’ parents to keep in touch, otherwise teenagers and bigger children would be able to exchange contacts with their friends themselves.
2 Weeks Before Moving House or Apartment

In case you have small children or pets, you may prefer to have them out of your way on moving day. There are pet hotels for that purpose and you can hire a babysitter for your kids. If you don’t want to risk having them stressed, you could arrange for them to stay at your family’ or friends’ home, whom your children and/ or pets know well and are used to, where they will feel safe.
You can start packing furniture. No, it is not early at all. If you have a 9 to 5 job like most people then you have only evening and weekends to make this happen which is not much time considering that you also need some hours of rest as well.
Return books to the library and return borrowed items. If you have things you’ve borrowed, now may also be the time to remind people of them and ask them back.
Check premises in your home you don’t go to so often like garage and attic to make sure there is nothing left to pack and that all items there have a clear destination. Sifting through items a day before moving day or on moving day itself will not be a good idea as you won’t have time for it most probably.
1 Week Before the Move

Confirm arrangements with the movers.
Confirm arrangements with utility companies.
If you have reserved an elevator for your move, again call to confirm.
Have you arranged for a place for your children and pets to stay? If you haven’t agreed upon an hour or if you wish to give extra instructions, this is the time to do so.
May the bed and one set of bed sheets be the last items that go into the truck because in this way they will be the first ones to go out as well.

Take down the tasks that you have to complete and put a deadline. Keep this list with you at all times to follow closely what is to be done for your move and when.
Prepare your open first box.
On Moving Day

Get up early. There is always something extra to do on moving day which has not been initially planned or something may come up in the last minute. Either way, stay focused and you will be fine.
This is the final day – there is no need to be worried, try to stay calm and go by the plan you have arranged with the moving company.
Have some drinks for the movers – coffee, tea, etc. will surely be appreciated. Order some lunch as well. It will give them an opportunity for a break and to regain their strength so that they can continue working on your move.
Take meter readings.

That’s it – you’ve made it! Take a deep breath and prepare mentally for the last part of the move – unpacking and setting up your new home.

On moving day prepare some drinks for the movers and for yourself – they will surely appreciate it.
In your new home while the movers are unloading your stuff, check which ones are already present by following the list with boxes you made for an easier organization.
After the unloading is complete, check that all home systems function normally – cooling/ heating, water, electricity, appliances, etc. and change the locks right away for safety reasons.
Set the bed first. Once you are tired and have no strength left you will surely not be much interested in going over more work just to get some rest.
Unpack necessities. This includes some kitchen items like cups, plates, appliances, clothes that you will need for the next few days, etc. If you have labeled your boxes clearly you should be able to quickly find those.
Order some food – you will most probably be too exhausted to cook anything so just call up for pizza or Chinese. And pop a bottle of champagne to celebrate the new beginning in your life.
Unpack other items in time as you need them.
