Get Estimates for Movers
One of the very first things you should do when moving is start comparing movers and requesting quotes. You want to be able to take your time and read reviews. This is a huge decision to make. Be sure the company you are interested in is registered with the Department of Transportation. You may also want to check their ranking with the Better Business Bureau, as well.
If you wait until the last minute, you may waste a lot of money on boxes. Unless you need specialty boxes for art pieces, a wardrobe, etc., you should not have to pay for them. You can pick them up for free from stores and restaurants. If you start collecting early then you can be a little more selective with the ones you choose to take.
Pack Seasonal Items
If it is spring and you are moving in two months, it’s probably safe to pack snowsuits, heavy blankets, holiday decorations, etc. Anything you know you won’t be using for the next two months should be packed. If you just do a box or two a day, you’ll never feel exhausted from the process.
There are a lot of things you probably don’t need or want anymore. Grab a few large boxes to hold items to donate, sell, or throw away.
Have a Yard Sale
Yard sales seem like a lot of work because they are. However, you may be quite surprised at how much money you can make in a weekend, especially if you are selling furniture, electronics, or sporting goods you don’t want to move. If you do this two months ahead of time, you still have plenty of time to squeeze in another one in a month or sell large items on Craigslist. This also gives you time to determine where your donation items should go.
If you have a large family then there is a good chance you have a well-stocked freezer and pantry. You want to start making dishes that will use your frozen and refrigerated foods first. If you plan thoughtfully, you may only need to buy essentials every week. This will save you money to help cover the expense of your long distance movers.
Arrange Travel Plans
Whether you are flying or driving, you will need to make arrangements. If you are driving make sure you have your route determined and hotels booked along the way.
